THE COURSE

Learning through game design

LUC’s year-long first-year course, Global Challenges: Understanding and Engagement, introduces Global Citizenship as an exploration, without prescribing an ideal citizen. Students expand their understanding of themselves, their communities of obligation, their ways of knowing, their imagination of engagement and their capacity to contribute.

After exploring peace and sustainability in Semester 1, students form teams, choose a Global Challenge and research its manifestation in The Hague, learning from people and organisations responding to it.

In the final seven weeks, teams process their learning by designing educational games for secondary-school students. They deepen their understanding and practise science communication by turning complex research into meaningful, playful experiences. As Citizen Scholars, they give back by sharing their learning with younger students.

THE REPOSITORY

Take the learning beyond LUC

This collection brings the students’ games together so teachers, pupils and other curious players can discover and use them.

Under the Creative Commons Attribution–NonCommercial (CC BY-NC) licence, you’re welcome to use, share and adapt the games for non-commercial purposes. Please credit the student authors and Leiden University College The Hague, including in any adapted version, and acknowledge your changes.

Our students hope their work will be useful to others- please share the repository widely! If you use a game, we’d love to hear about it. Message its creators through the "Reach out the designers" button found on each game and let our programme know too by contacting us.
